Porcelain Enamel Tank: the inorganic coating that outlives the tank around it

When buyers in North America type "porcelain enamel tank," they are asking for the same fused-glass-to-steel panel the rest of the world calls GFS. Here is what the term means, why the bond beats paint by an order of magnitude, and what to check before you approve a specification.

Decode the term first. "Porcelain enamel" is the ASTM / North-American name for vitreous enamel — ISO 28765 titles it "Vitreous and porcelain enamels — Design of bolted steel tanks." It is not bathroom-fixture enamel over cast iron. The glass is a ground frit fired onto a low-carbon steel plate at 820–930°C until it bonds at the molecular level. One material, two names; the rest of this page is the buyer's guide that most suppliers skip.

What a porcelain enamel tank actually is

A porcelain enamel tank is a bolted steel tank whose panels carry a permanent inorganic glass lining on both faces. The panel is cut, blasted and rounded at the edges, dipped or sprayed with a silica-based enamel slip, then fired in a controlled furnace. At furnace temperature the glass melts and wets the steel, forming a chemical and mechanical bond that painting or baking can never reach. The result is a single material that has the load-bearing behaviour of steel and the chemical inertness of glass.

Because the coating is applied and cured in the factory, the panel leaves the line already protected. Site work is bolting and sealing, not spraying and waiting on the weather — which is the root of the lifespan and lifecycle-cost advantage below.

The bond science: why it is not "paint"

Inorganic, so it does not age

Paint is an organic film. It oxidises, chalks and peels on a clock. A fused glass layer is inert: it has no polymer to break down, so documented bolted glass-fused tanks are still in service after 60-plus years. The coating does not need a recoat program.

Bond strength, measured

A fused glass-to-steel bond runs about 3,450 N/cm (≈5,000 psi). A baked or field-applied paint bond is roughly 750 psi — an order of magnitude weaker, and the first place a welded or painted tank loses the war to corrosion.

Edges and bolt holes sealed in the furnace

The failure points on any coated tank are the sheet edges and the bolt holes. We round those edges and apply the glass edge coat in the same furnace run as the face, so the most exposed steel is the best protected — not a site paint touch-up that fails first.

Smooth, inert, cleanable

The fired surface is non-porous and glass-smooth, which suppresses biofilm and algae and makes washdown quick. For potable and food-grade duty that hygiene is the reason specifiers reach for enamel over epoxy.

The myth: "isn't enamel fragile like a sink?"

It is a fair question, and the honest answer separates a real supplier from a brochure. A tank panel is a thick low-carbon steel plate with glass fused into its surface — not a millimetre of enamel over brittle cast iron. The 5,000 psi bond means it will not flake like paint. That said, a hard direct impact can chip the glass, as it would any glass surface, and on-site touch-up enamel is available for those rare cases.

Two media boundaries are worth stating up front so your RFQ is correct: fused enamel is excellent across a wide pH range but is not resistant to hydrofluoric acid, and in very high-chloride service (tens of thousands of mg/L Cl⁻) the coating choice should be confirmed with the panel maker. A supplier who hides those edges is the one to worry about — we would rather lose a wrong-spec inquiry than a tank in the field.

Choose factory-baked epoxy where the budget is tight and 15–25 years is enough. Field-applied epoxy on welded tanks is the fallback when the tank cannot be factory-coated at all. The coating, not the steel, decides the service life.

6What foundation and site conditions does a porcelain enamel tank need?

A reinforced concrete ring beam or slab, levelled to about ±3 mm around the circumference so the first course seats without racking. Above the foundation the build is mechanical — panels, EPDM gaskets and self-locking bolts — so it goes up in most weather without cranes or welding permits. Plan the slab early; everything above it is bolted.
