A GFS bolted tank (Glass-Fused-to-Steel, sometimes called a glass-lined or enamel bolted tank) is built from steel sheets whose surface is coated with a silicate glass enamel and fired at 820 to 930 °C. The heat bonds the glass to the steel at a molecular level, so a single panel carries the strength of steel and the inert, non-porous surface of glass.
Those panels are enameled in the factory, shipped flat, and bolted together on site. There is no on-site welding, no field-applied toxic coating, and no 28-day concrete cure. The tank goes up in weeks rather than months, and it meets the hygiene bar that drinking water demands.
The enamel coating is inorganic and non-toxic. On tanks built to NSF/ANSI 61 (and WRAS where local rules require it), the lining is verified independently as safe for long-term contact with drinking water. You can show compliance on paper instead of assuming it.
Concrete can leach lime and hold contaminants. Painted steel can shed liner material. The glass layer does neither, because it does not react with the water. Stored water keeps its clarity, smell and taste.
The fired enamel is smooth and glossy (about 6.0 on the Mohs scale). Biofilm, algae and scale have no surface to cling to. That means cleaner water, easier washing, and fewer cleaning chemicals over the tank's life.
Organic coatings peel, blister and break down. Glass does not. A correctly specified GFS bolted tank runs 30 years or more with little maintenance, which protects public health and keeps lifecycle cost down.
Pre-enameled panels arrive ready to assemble. Installation is typically about half as fast as concrete and far quicker than field-welded steel. There is less weather delay and no coating fumes on site, which matters when a community needs water soon.
Need more capacity next year? Add panels. Site changing? Take it apart and move it. At end of life, both steel and glass are recyclable. The tank grows and shifts with the project.
