When a storage tank sits in wastewater, biogas slurry or seawater, paint and concrete both fail. A GFS tank fuses glass directly to steel, so the surface that touches your liquid is inert, seamless and permanent. No repainting. No cracking. Just decades of service.

GFS tank (Glass-Fused-to-Steel tank) — also called a glass-lined steel (GLS) or enamel bolted tank — is the storage vessel most specifiers reach for when the liquid is aggressive and the budget has to last. What a GFS tank actually is

A GFS tank is built from flat steel panels that are coated in a factory, then bolted together on site. The coating is not paint. It is a glass frit that is fired onto both faces of the steel plate at 820–930°C. At that temperature the molten glass reacts with the steel surface and forms an inorganic, chemical bond — the two materials become one. The result combines the tensile strength and flexibility of steel with the chemical inertness of glass.

That matters because paint sits on top of steel and eventually lets water through to the metal. Glass is the surface. There is nothing to peel, bubble or rust underneath.

The detail most suppliers skip: enamel can fail by "fish scaling" — tiny glass flakes pop off the steel over time because hydrogen released at the steel surface weakens the bond. A GFS tank built on TRS (Titanium-Rich Steel) substrate, fired in a two-fire, two-coat process, suppresses that defect at the source. Ask any supplier whether their substrate is standard steel or TRS, and whether each panel is holiday-tested before it ships. The answer tells you more about 20-year performance than any brochure.

Concrete still has its place for very large buried reservoirs where footprint is free. For everything above ground, corrosive, or likely to need expansion, bolted GFS is the lower-risk choice.

For a tank that holds drinking water or sits in a municipal plant, the paperwork matters as much as the steel. A credible GFS tank is designed and built to:

  • AWWA D103 — structural design of factory-coated bolted steel tanks (hoop stress, seismic, fabrication tolerance).
  • EN ISO 28765 — vitreous enamel coating for drinking-water tanks.
  • ISO 9001 — quality management through design, production and QA.
  • NSF/ANSI 61 — confirms nothing toxic leaches into potable water.
  • NFPA 22 — for fire-protection water storage duties.

Quality is enforced panel by panel: every enamel sheet is holiday-tested at 700–1500 V (depending on service) before it leaves the factory, so a coated panel arrives with zero discontinuities. That is the difference between "coated" and "tested coated."
